What We Can Learn from Some Foreboding Security Predictions

COVID-19 is far from over, and many businesses have had to pull their attention away from cybersecurity because of the health crisis at hand. In an annual survey, 273 cybersecurity professionals have provided us with some really interesting stats. Let’s take a look at how to work on improving tech during pandemic.

Breaking Down the Numbers

In the 2020 Black Hat Attendee Survey, professionals were concerned with the potential cyberthreats and breaches that might be flared due to the pandemic. 94 percent of respondents saw COVID-19 increasing the threats they were dealing with and 24 percent said those threats were critical.

90 percent of cybersecurity professionals predicted that there will be a major attack on UNited States critical infrastructure within the two years, which is a rise of this prediction stat from 77 percent in 2019, 69 percent in 2018 and so on. This might be because people are working more remotely, which can lead to insecurity issues.

Here are some security concerns associated with the tools meant to secure our operations:

  • Passwords were only rated at 25 percent effective
  • Antivirus tools were rated at 31 percent effective
  • Cloud security providers and cloud security tools receivednot great ratings at 41 and 46 percent seeing them as ineffective.
  • 70 percent of these cybersecurity experts predict a major security breach within their own organization in one year, and 59 percent cite insufficient security staffing and 56 percent cite insufficient budgetary resources to protect business operations.
  • 53 percent of surveyed stated that they felt serious burnout beginning. Considering that 2019’s stats placed this number at 40 percent, this jump is high and rising.
  • What Can Be Done?

There needs to be a shift in how businesses do their security. Cybersecurity needs to be taken more seriously, especially amid other issues that arise, like a pandemic. If passwords, authentication, encryption and other strategies are rated so low, it’s a surefire sign that businesses aren’t using them to their full advantages.
