Facebook: The one that didn’t start the social media phenomenon, but has grown it exponentially and brought our information to the forefront and made it available, basically putting a target on their head. So many people use Facebook to keep up with friends, support a cause, or to support their business. With this exponential growth, it has created a data mine that is ripe for exploitation whether it is legitimate or not. On that note let’s look at one of the largest data leaks in history that Facebook is currently dealing with.
The Issue
At the start of April, over 533 million Facebook records were leaked by hacker on the dark web. This information included users’ Facebook IDs, phone numbers, email addresses, birthdates, bios, relationship status, and more and was leaked publicly.
While Facebook confirmed the information was from a 2019 leak and have since patched the vulnerability that was originally used, it is still a ton of data that was leaked. Especially because the data was dropped online for free. While they obviously want to brush it off because it is old data, it is still very concerning that the data is still available online.
Data That Is Leaked, Is Available Forever
While the tangible value of the data is unknown, we do know that once data is leaked, it is going to cause issues for Facebook because Facebook’s major revenue comes from transactions dealing with data, but it is out there for free. It was most likely retrieved through a hacking maneuver called scraping.
Your company does not have the same amount of data that Facebook does, but you do want to keep your company’s data safe. A data leak of any size can ruin or drastically harm your business.
