MyTek’s IT Consultants Warn that Microsoft is Ending Support for Major OS Titles

Microsoft gets a lot of things right about its business-focused Windows operating system. It’s easy to use, provides stability, and goes through frequent updates. However, Microsoft is ending support for extremely old versions to maintain security.

Come January 14th, 2020, you will lose tech support for two major operating systems from Microsoft: Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. That’s why you need to have an alternative strategy in place to migrate your business in time. Else, you could disrupt business continuity and expose your devices to malware and viruses.

Windows 7

Windows 7, one of the most popular Microsoft OS versions, will lose support soon. However, Microsoft has come out with an ad campaign to create awareness about their upgrade policies. But several organizations do not have a plan in place to upgrade their systems. One major reason for this could be that a high volume of systems puts the logistics and finances under pressure.

Even though you can follow the upgrade guidelines, it would be better to take the guidance of a seasoned IT service provider like MyTek to chalk out the right business strategy. Also, we can help you with the proper use of Microsoft 365, a subscription-based platform launched by Microsoft to ensure a smooth upgrade. MyTek’s IT consultants will analyze your business and explain whether cloud-based or on-premise solutions should work for your business.

If you have a Pro or Enterprise version of the OS, an extended security update option is available at a premium price. But, it is available on a per license basis which can become costly.

Windows Server 2008 R2

The Windows suite of server 2008 R2 will no longer receive support from January 2020. Similar to the case of Windows 7, Windows Server R2 will no longer receive security and patch updates from Microsoft. It means that if you do not upgrade your system, you can make your machines and your business vulnerable to cyberattacks.  If your business uses Windows Server 2008 R2, you need to make sure that you upgrade by the end of the support date.

There are two new versions of the Windows Server software, and there’s also a cloud-based Azure option. Even though cloud-based systems are cost-effective, you might still need additional features.
