The USB PC Killer Terrorizes a Private College

Network security is crucial for organizations of any size. With greater security, you can ensure the confidentiality of your sensitive data such as personal information, business records, and more.

In recent times, the network security of educational institutions has been in greater focus. In April 2019, Saint Rose College in Albany, New York, reported a network security lapse involving a USB killer. Postgraduate alum by the name of Vishwanath Akuthota used a USB killer device to disable campus computers. There were 59 campus computers and 7 Apple computers. Akuthota, an Indian national, has pleaded guilty to charges. He faces ten years in prison with a fine of $250,000. Interestingly, he used an iPhone to devise the USB PC killer and, the college incurred a total cost of $58,371 to restore the devices.

That brings us to the question, What is a USB PC killer? And how can we prevent USB PC killer’s attack?

What is a USB PC Killer?

A USB PC killer is a device originally designed to test electronic components’ performance against high surges. But, when inserted into a USB port, it sucks electric power and redirects it back to the USB port. In this way, a USB PC killer damages the hardware components of your device. However, this device is not used by any major companies so far.

What Causes Your Organization’s Biggest Network Security Risk?

A 2018 study shows that over two-thirds of network security issues in an organization arise due to internal action. Be it data theft, hacking, or the use of USB PC killer, employees have a significant share of wrongdoings. But, you need not distrust all your employees. You can quickly put in place preventive measures for tackling data breaches.

Protective Measures to Safeguard Your IT From Employees’ Actions

You can take specific measures to eliminate USB PC killer-type attacks in your organization. First, there needs to be workplace training for your employees. They need to know the dos and don’ts of using the organizational devices. A well-trained staff makes fewer errors and is more careful with the use of equipment. But, at the same time, ensure that they don’t cross the lines and misuse your systems.

To prevent misuse of devices, you can use advanced technological tools to track your business functioning. By doing so, you can detect and avert a threat well in advance.
