Tom Bossert, the homeland security adviser to the White House, has given a statement blaming the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and North Korea for the WannaCry security attacks that happened between May 12th and 15th of 2017. According to Bossert, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and Japan agree with his statement of blame.
Bossert even wrote an opinion-editorial piece for the Wall Street Journal stating, “We do not make this allegation lightly. It is based on evidence. We are not alone with our findings, either. Other governments and private companies agree. The United Kingdom attributes the attack to North Korea, and Microsoft traced the attack to cyber affiliates of the North Korean government.” This conclusion is not new, especially after the North Korean hacking group Lazarus was found to be associated with WannaCry a few months before the attacks.
The attacks used EternalBlue and its foundation Windows Server Message Block. EternalBlue was stolen from the NSA in April and was released by the hacking group the Shadow Brokers. The combination of these two made it possible for thousands of businesses to become infected, resulting in the shut down of healthcare organizations as well.
Because of these attacks, Microsoft has decided to partner with Facebook. This will hopefully be a good move because Bossert said that North Korea has begun to focus more on cyber attacks than on nuclear ones.
